Benazir murder case: Accused police officials submit bail application

Counsel of detained officers submits application saying the two men are innocent.

The detained policemen in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case, former City Police Officer (CPO) ?Rawalpindi Saud Aziz and Superintendent Police (SP) Khurram Shahzad, have filed a bail application in the Rawalpindi Anti Terrorism Court that has been hearing the case.

The counsel of the detained police officers took the stance in the application that the?two men?are innocent. He argued that the Joint Interrogation Team of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has found no direct evidence against them.

Saud Aziz and Khurram Shahzad are on a judicial remand after the FIA’s request for an extension in the physical remand was rejected last week.

The?FIA has been?ordered to present them before the court on January 7, when the bail application will also be heard.

Earlier, the legal counsel for former CPO, Waheed Anjum had claimed while addressing a press conference in Rawalpindi that his client was being victimised by his portrayal as the killer of Benazir Bhutto as the allegations against him were yet to be proven. He had said that the allegations levelled against the former CPO were baseless and that both the accused were public servants and did not have links with any political factions.

Torture of students: LHC CJ orders registration of cases against police

LAHORE:?Chief Justice Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Ijaz Ahmad Sheikh on Monday ordered?registration of cases?against police personnel involved in the torture?of students outside the Punjab Assembly.

The Chief Justice summoned the secretary education on Tuesday in this regard.

During the hearing of the suo motu case, the government lawyer pleaded that the teachers are protesting against the board of governors?because they run private academies. He assured, on behalf of the Punjab government, that the fee will not increase after the board of governors are established.

Representatives of the Teachers Association said they will not protest if the government does not increase the fee.

The court has also summoned a record of private education institutions.

Protests in Faisalabad

Teachers in Faisalabad have boycotted educational activities for an indefinite period, in protest against the formation of a board of governors.

Students are facing difficulties due to the boycott as the college entry test has also been postponed.

Teachers and students also demonstrated on Sargodha Road where they said that the Punjab government is using delaying tactics in this regard.

They reiterated that they will not accept the formation of a board of governors and the boycott will continue till the acceptance of their demands.

Meanwhile, the administration has deployed police personnel outside all the colleges.

PML-Q condemns privatisation

Pakistan Muslim League Quaid-i-Azam (PML-Q) Chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain condemned the decision of the Punjab government’s decision to form a board of governors for educational institutions.

Talking to the media at his residence in Lahore, Shujaat said his party will support students and teachers in this issue.

He alleged that the only purpose of forming a board of governors is to entertain a few people.

Police in Kohat seize 1,100kg of explosives

KOHAT:?Police in Kohat arrested two suspects and seized their explosive laden vehicle on Saturday.

According to?Express 24/7 correspondent, Umar Farooq the vehicle, a blue pickup truck bearing the number plate J-1019, was carrying 1,100 kilogramme of explosive material.

The suspects, who have been moved to an unknown location, were arrested after the vehicle was stopped at a checkpost.

Khalid Umerzai, commissioner in Kohat, said that the vehicle as headed to Orakzai Agency. He said that security was already on high alert and more information on the suspects would be revealed after interrogation.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and the bomb disposal squad has also moved in to check the vehicle.

Terror had earlier struck Kohat when at least 18 people were killed and another 32 injured on December 9, after a suicide bomber blew himself up at a bus stand in the district.
